The Executive Board of Local 749, which represents over 1,200 Teamsters in South Dakota, voted unanimously in support of a merger with Local 120. "Merging means more strength at the bargaining table because the two local unions have many of the same employers under contract," according to Local 749 Secretary-Treasurer Randy Knudtson, "It also means having the critical mass necessary to run successful organizing, political communications and educational programs."
The merger of Local 749 and Local 120 would result in a powerhouse representing over 15,000 Teamsters in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota. "Merging with Local 749 would continue the aggressive growth of Local 120," stated Local 120 Secretary-Treasurer and IBT Central Region Vice President Brad Slawson, Sr., "Growth that gives us the strength to stand up to employers and to deliver results for our members."
Slawson and Knudtson have conducted meetings across South Dakota to field questions from the membership about the merger. Executive Board members and business agents from both local unions have joined them. Any members with questions about the merger are encouraged to contact Brad Slawson Jr. at (763) 267-6101 or bslawsonjr@teamsterslocal120.org.
