Karlan has been a Teamster since 1997, when he began working at the USF Holland in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Karlan is active in the union, and has been elected union steward at his workplace.
Karlan has been an active volunteer at Local 120, assisting with union events, political activities, and organizing and concerted labor activities.
In January of 2019, Karlan was hired to be an Organizer of Local 120.
